Counseling

About Mrs. VanessVillalobos - School Counselor - M.S., P.P.S
Vanessa started working for CNUSD in 2003 at John Adams Elementary as a Noon Supervisor. Since then, she has worked as a Rocket Aide, Computer Aide, Bilingual Aide, One-on-One Aide, and a Community Assistant. She completed her degrees and certification to become and became a School Counselor in 2017.

Vanessa’s favorite part about working at CNUSD is that it feels like home. All three of her children attended CNUSD schools and graduated from Santiago High. She worked for CNUSD while earning her Associates, Bachelors and Masters/PPS Credential. For these reasons, CNUSD has been a big part of her and her family’s life.

“CNUSD feels like family,” said Vanessa. “It reminds me of the Cheers theme song: Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.”

Vanessa’s most memorable moment during her time at CNUSD was the day she became a School Counselor. Sharing the news with her family and co-workers at the Parent Center are moments she will never forget.

“It was like I had finally arrived at the most awaited destination of fulfilling my purpose in life,” she said.

Being a School Counselor calls for very unpredictable and dynamic days. Her days consist of running counseling groups with students, doing guidance lessons, behavior interventions, communicating with parents, and assisting SST’s and IEP’s. Vanessa is always willing to give a listening ear to anyone who needs it.

At the end of the day, Vanessa takes with her the love, courage, and hope she gets from students and families. As a school counselor, she sees first-hand the struggles and triumphs of students and their families. She sees being a confidante as a privilege and one she holds dearly.

School Counselors are the first line of support for students. She says the long hours during the week and weekends that no one will ever know about, extreme efforts and complex situations are all worth it. School Counselors help guide students in their journey through childhood and adolescence.

Vanessa and her husband have been married for 27 years. She is the mother of three wonderful children; Amanda, Brian, and Melanie.

“My family is my heartbeat, they are my everything,” said Vanessa. “My husband and children will always be my greatest accomplishment in life.”

Vanessa enjoys spending time with her family, reading, the ocean, and knitting blankets that she can give to the homeless for winter. Her family pets are three English Bulldogs, Toby, Tank, and Teddy.

Vanessa likes to remind people that no matter what, with hard work, determination, persistence, and consistency, you can reach your dreams.

“We only have one life to live, make the best of it every day by finding the joy in everything and reminding yourself that no matter what, the sun will rise again the next day, with a new opportunity to do better than the day before,” she said.

Vanessa will always remember her third-grade teacher, Mrs. Lang, who inspired her to be kind and caring.

“Helping others the way Mrs. Lang so caringly helped me, is my way of giving back,” said Vanessa. “Looking back on my life, I know I was always meant to be a School Counselor.”
